And it’s exactly the problem I work on every day.
Your business is growing, but the payoff isn’t keeping up. Revenue is up, cash flow is unpredictable, and no matter how hard you work, the gap between what you’re earning and what you’re keeping just keeps widening. You’ve tried things that were supposed to help and they didn’t. The problem isn’t you, and it isn’t your team. It’s the systems underneath, and that’s exactly what I fix.
I worked for a boss who had a habit of storming down the hall, slamming doors, and demanding to know why projects weren't more profitable. Wow, was he a yeller! It was stressful as you heard him working his way down the hall toward your office, but the question was fair.
My first instinct was to defend the team. We were working hard, the quality was there, and clients were happy, so why weren't the numbers better?
Not into the financials, but into how the work actually got done. How we scoped projects, how we set expectations with clients, how we built deliverables. As we mapped it all out, something started to click. We had been rebuilding the wheel on every engagement. Work that could run in parallel was running in sequence, scope was fuzzy, and handoffs were slow. None of it was anyone's fault; there just weren't systems to connect it all.
Tighter scoping, clearer client expectations, reusable deliverable templates, clearly defined handoffs, parallel workstreams where we could. The hours came down, costs came down, and profitability went up.
That was the moment I understood that profit isn't just a financial problem. It's a systems problem. And once you see it that way, you can't unsee it.
If you're wondering whether the boss stopped yelling and slamming doors — he didn't. But it wasn't about profit anymore.
I'm Karen Hairston, Profit Strategy Advisor, Certified Cash Flow Advisor, and author of Stop Growing Broke, Start Growing Profits. I've spent 25 years inside organizations of every size, from Fortune 500 companies and government agencies to fast-growing tech and service firms. That experience gave me something most consultants don't have: A clear understanding of how systems actually work and what breaks when they don't.
I hold the Clear Path to Cash™ Professional Certification, and I've presented at national conferences including America's SBDC. My work has been featured in SBAM Focus, Expert in You Magazine, and several podcasts for small business leaders.
Most consultants look at your finances, your systems, or your team separately. I look at all three together, because that’s where most profit leaks actually hide. Your finances, operations, and people aren’t separate problems; they’re connected. Fix the right thing first and the others start to follow.
I don’t show up with a generic playbook, hand you a report, and disappear. I work alongside you to find the leaks, build the fix, and stay until it’s actually working. We go one step at a time, in a way that fits how your business actually runs, so you see real progress without adding more to your plate.
My goal is simple:
Make your business work the way it should, so more of what you earn actually stays in your bank account.
My clients are established business owners who have built something real and are frustrated that the numbers don’t reflect it. They’re not looking for more hustle or another tool. They’re looking for someone who can find the real problem and fix it.
You might be a good fit if:
You’ve worked too hard to keep wondering where the money went.
Schedule a call and let’s figure out where to start.
